The Biological Products Industry Alliance (BPIA) submitted comments to the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) ahead of its Fall 2026 meeting, highlighting several priorities important to biological product manufacturers and organic growers.
In its comments, BPIA expressed support for the approval of synthetically produced chitosan for use as a pesticide or plant and soil amendment in organic crop production. BPIA also supported the continued listing of EPA List 3 inert ingredients, emphasizing the importance of maintaining access to these ingredients while the organic industry awaits further federal rulemaking.
BPIA also weighed in on the NOSB’s 2028 sunset reviews, supporting the continued allowance of several substances used in organic production, including peracetic acid, copper sulfate, ozone gas, and magnesium oxide. BPIA further supported maintaining the existing prohibition on calcium chloride and rotenone.
BPIA will continue working with USDA, NOSB, and industry stakeholders to ensure biological products and other important crop production tools are appropriately considered within the organic regulatory framework. See BPIA’s comments at BPIA NOSB Fall 2026 Mtg Comments
